मार्गशीर्ष महीने की कृष्ण पक्ष के आठवें दिन कालभैरव अष्टमी का व्रत रखा जाता है। शिवपुराण के अनुसार इसी दिन भगवान शिव ने कालभैरव के रूप में अवतार लिया था। इन्हें काशी का कोतवाल माना जाता है। कालभैरव अष्टमी व्रत भय और दुखों से मुक्ति दिलाने वाला माना गया है। इस दिन विशेष रूप से शिव जी की भैरव और ईशान नाम से पूजा की जाती है। साल 2017 में यह व्रत 10 नवंबर को रखा जाएगा।  कालभैरव अष्टमी से जुड़ी कथा ( Related Story of Kaal Bahirovaastami in Hindi) एक कथा के अनुसार एक बार सृष्टि के रचयिता ब्रह्मा जी ने शिव जी के रूप-रेखा और वेश-भूषा पर कुछ अपशब्द बोल दिया, जिससे वह बहुत क्रोधित हुए तथा उनके शरीर से छाया के रूप में काल भैरव की उत्पत्ति हुई। मार्गशीर्ष माह की अष्टमी तिथि को ही काल भैरव की उत्पत्ति हुई थी। क्रोध से उत्पन्न काल भैरव जी ने अपने नाखून से ब्रह्मा जी का सिर काट दिया। इसके बाद ब्रह्म हत्या के पाप से मुक्ति पाने के लिए काल भैरव तीनों लोकों में घूमें परन्तु कही भी उन्हें शांति नहीं मिली, अंत में घूमते हुए वह काशी पहुंचे जहां उन्हें शांति प्राप्त हुई। वहां एक भविष्यवाणी हुई जिसमें भैरव बाबा को काशी का कोतवाल बनाया गया तथा वहां रहकर लोगों को उनके पापों से मुक्ति दिलाने के लिए वहां बसने को कहा गया। कालभैरव अष्टमी व्रत विधि (Kaal Bahirovaastami Vrat Vidhi in Hindi) अष्टमी के दिन प्रातः स्नान करने के पश्चात पितरों का तर्पण और श्राद्ध कर कालभैरव की पूजा करनी चाहिए। इस दिन व्यक्ति को पूरे दिन व्रत रखकर आधी रात के समय धूप,दीप,गंध,काले तिल,उड़द, सरसों तेल आदि से पूजा कर जोर-जोर से बाबा की आरती करनी चाहिए। इस दिन व्रत रखने वाले व्यक्ति को पूरी रात जागरण करना चाहिए। माना जाता है कि  भैरव बाबा और काल भैरव की सवारी कुत्ता है इसलिए व्रत की समाप्ति पर घर पर पकवान बनाकर सबसे पहले कुत्ते को खिलाना चाहिए। इस दिन कुत्ते को भोजन करने से भैरव बाबा बहुत प्रसन्न होते हैं। कालभैरव अष्टमी व्रत फल (Benefits of Kaal Bahirovaastami Vrat in Hindi) मान्यता है कि इस व्रत की महिमा से व्रती के सारे विघ्न दूर हो जाते हैं। भूत-प्रेत तथा जादू-टोना जैसी बुरी शक्तियों का उस कोई प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता है। भैरव बाबा की पूजा और आराधना करने से मृत्यु का भय समाप्त हो जाता है।
